While doing research for this article, I came across some interesting trivia about “The Little Mermaid“ and I would like to share some of it with you:
- Released in 1989, “The Little Mermaid” was the last Disney animated feature film in which hand-painted cells and an analog camera were used. This all included 1,000 colors on 1,100 backgrounds and well over 1,000,000 drawings.
- CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) was used for the first time in the wedding scene toward the end of the film.
- “The Little Mermaid” is considered to be Walt Disney’s most successful animated feature since the release of “Fantasia” in 1940.
- As you might guess, “The Little Mermaid” included many millions of bubbles. But do you know that each and every one of these bubbles was hand-drawn individually. The task was so big that it had to be farmed out to Pacific Rim Productions, a production company based in Beijing, China and its progress was threatened by the infamous student uprising in Tienanmin Square.
