Mermaid Costume Craze
Joint the Mermaid Costume Craze for Halloween 2009!
The mermaid costume craze may be a relatively new phenomena as more and more women and girls of all ages are seeking to become the princesses who have been simultaneously revered and feared, glorified and extolled for so many centuries — the princesses who emerged from their kingdoms deep down on the floor of the great big oceans to tempt and lure men to follow them — the beautiful water creatures that mystify and charm.
True, the mermaid costume craze is new but mermaids are not at all. Tales about mermaids and mermaid-like creatures date back into antiquity and the first known stories which were documented in writing stem from the ancient world of 1000 BC in the Near East and more specifically in Assyria. The mermaid craze is by no means limited to costumes (women’s mermaid costumes, infant mermaid costumes, chid mermaid costumes, plus size memaid costumes, sexy mermaid costumes, etc.) although the selection is certain in verging on obsessive proportions. But rather, the mermaid craze extends to:
- Collectors’ Items. Mermaid figurines made of fine china, porcelain, ceramic, blown glass, plastics, carved out of stone or wood and shaped from a variety of metals have become collectors’ items around the world. And some of these mermaid figurines, particularly those which are considered antique, have been gaining quite a bit of monetary value.
- Mythology. Mermaids have been depicted in mythology and folklore of the Greeks, Assyrians, Babylonians and many other others Eastern and Western cultures.
- Literature. Mermaids have been pivotal characters in countless pieces of literature — the most famous among them are “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen and “The Arabian Nights” (a.k.a. “One Thousand and One Nights”) which is a collection of short stories that were the works of medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Egyptian and Mesopotamian authors and was compiled through the centuries.
Even Shakespeare, Yeats, Eliot, Wilde, Barry, and Baum saluted Mermaids in their poetry and prose.
- Art.
Many great artists and sculptor selected mermaids for their artistic expression and among there are Munch, Waterhouse, Beardsley, Pyle, Magritte, Rubens and Bosch. - Miscellaneous.
Through the years, mermaids have also appeared on the coats of arms, carved on furniture, woven into tapestries and so on and on.
Now, is there any wonder why so many more women and girls of all ages prefer girls mermaid costumes than any other type of costume? I think not.

I really like your strategy of promoting individual costumes, so that the person visiting your site has already decided that they want a particular costume before they actually visit a site, whereas my site covers a whole range of costumes. Maybe I will have to reconsider my own strategy for any future halloween sites that I launch. Thanks for showing me a better way.
I understand there have been claimed sitings of Mermaids around Java and British Columbia…it’s been awhile…1870, 1890 and more recently in 1967.
The mermaid costume craze that’s going on right now probably has something to do with the numerous sightings reported in the Jerusalem Post. There is even a $1 Million reward being offered for proof that mermaids exist off the coast of Israel!
I think any female of any age would love these mermaid costumes, especially the little ones. Good overview of mermaid history as well..it’s wonderful to learn more about mermaids while choosing to dress as one.
