Vintage Mermaid Costumes
It should not come as a surprise to anyone to realize that vintage mermaid costumes can be found in abundance in vintage and costume brick and mortar retail stores as well as all over the Internet at countless online merchant sites which specialize in Halloween products such as costumes and accessories. After all, mermaids have been around for centuries. Well, maybe not the actual mermaids, but certainly the myths, the fables and the legends that have been told and retold by many cultures throughout the world.
Mermaids, the aquatic female beings, are depicted as having women’s upper bodies (torsos and heads with long flowing hair) and a fish’s tails; have been allegedly enchanting men to distraction and thus causing them to drown with their sweetly alluring voices and their enthralling beauty.
Now, what woman would not want to emulate, to copy, to pretend that men (young and old) can easy fall for her exquisite looks and her magical voice? What woman would not want to fantasize being a creature that holds so much power over the opposite sex? What woman would not want to become the reigning princess of the supernatural kingdom beneath the deep blue sea, even if it is only for a brief spell of a few hours?
Therefore, when the occasions permit or encourage stepping out of the world of drudgery and reality and into la-la land — occasions such as Halloween, masquerades, theme parties, parades and so on — women of all ages have been opting to dress in mermaid costumes more often than in any other type of costume. And little girls? Well, little girls like to do what their mommies, aunties and big sisters do. So, little girls also choose mermaid costumes over other kinds, although for different reasons.
Are you looking for vintage plus size mermaid costumes or vintage sexy mermaid costumes? Are you looking for vintage teen mermaid costumes or vintage girl mermaid costumes? Well, you’ve come to the right place!
Thus mermaid costumes have become extraordinarily popular. If a woman or a girl wants to look a little different from the rest of the mermaids she may encounter where dressing in costumes is expected, she could look for a vintage costume store, real or virtual. True, vintage mermaid costumes may be a little more pricy but isn’t being unique and looking special worth the extra few dollars? I think it is.
So ladies, stand out in the crowd and put on your special sexy mermaid costume this Halloween and watch the other mermaids turn green with envy and the men turn flushing red because you look so HOT.

Great Post! Imagine how sexy a mermaid costume can be, if that’s what you’re looking for… Also great couples costume ideas, like he could be the pirate, and she could be the rescued mermaid….
Many a lonely pirate (or sailor) was “rescued” by a mermaid if you believe the legends. I always thought they were a bit of wish fulfillment for sailors but it appears that they are generally viewed in a bad light by sailors much like the sirens of Greek mythology.
Our daughters love mermaids! I can’t tell you the number of times we’ve read stories about Ariel, King Triton and the Sea Witch. It has all the elements little girls love…beautiful singing, being a princess, true love, ahhhh….I guess big girls like them too!
I read that Manatees or Dugongs were considered to be mermaids by sailors in olden times. If you have ever seen a Manatee, you can sort of understand why if they had particularly bad eyesight. At best you could describe their proportions as Rubenesque. Give me Darryl Hannah every time.
If only there were real mermaids…but then again are all mermaids that good looking or are there ugly ones too. But if you are stuck at see for month on end guess all fish begin to look the same..
They say in cyprus there are real mermaids of the sea and if anyone can get a picture or video there will be a big reward but if you got a picture of a mermaid the sky would be the limit as far as money was concerned through the media. Heres to dreaming.
On the subject of “real mermaids”, there are some countries in the Caribbean where they actually do believe that they exist. As for me, there is nothing wrong with romanticizing about a fish, or should I say a sexy fish, especially on those long voyages that these fisherman in the Caribbean go on in order to eek out a living.
